2016-2017 By The Numbers
Income Comparison Analysis
- Contributions from individuals jumped almost $10,000 this year, and our pool of individual donors grew significantly: from 93 to 141 — a 52% increase. Many of our new donors were introduced to Little Opera through a spring benefit concert thrown for us by the music-based tour company Castles and Concerts.
- Contributions from foundations jumped as well, with a 157% increase from the previous year.
- Event income from the Little Gala fell slightly from last year.
- Earned income jumped another 79% this season thanks to an increase in demand for fee-based opera creation workshops at AltSchool.
Expense Comparison Analysis
- Programming expenses increased significantly this season, reflecting an increase in programming (more in-school workshops, addition of after-school K/1 class and homework lab).
Scholarships and Tuition Assistance
Little Opera works to transcend divides in the community, and build pivotal long-term relationships across differences in age, race, and family income.
To help us build a diverse student body, we work with teachers from San Francisco’s Unified School District to identify low-income children who show an aptitude or drive for the arts, and provide full scholarships and significantly reduced tuition to those families.
This season was the first year where filled our classes but did not meet our goal of 30% paying full tuition, 30% paying on a sliding scale, and 30% on full scholarship. Moving forward, those spots will be reserved for scholarship students before enrollment opens.
